As most of our regular visitors will already know; our Blog updates have been less than regular due to project and work time constraints.

However; Michaela has been regularly updating our project Facebook page with photos, videos and news.

In the blog, we will provide a regular synopsis of the challenges, obstacles, heartaches and resulting passions of this project. We will highlight the daily activities associated with the frustrations and joy of rebuilding an environmentally sustainable home that all involved will be forever proud to have been associated!

Moving into March madness

March 5, 2009
My eyes were going blurry from looking on the internet for toilets, sinks and faucets. Sean Roberts, our chosen Plumbing contractor suggested I go to Fergusons so I could actually see the products. Of course everything has to be low flow, high efficiency. Who would have known there are so many toilets and sinks to choose from?? It was overwhelming, but I was determined to work with their Green saleswoman, Haley, and get it done! It took 2 hours, but we did it.
The Water Sense toilets have dual flush capability and only use either .8 gallons or 1.2 GPF (gallons per flush). They will save as much as 6,000 gallons of water annually over a traditional 1.6 gallon toilet – isn’t that amazing? And Sean said by changing the aerator, most faucets will adapt for the greatest efficiency.
Nearly everything I chose is made by Kohler which has a huge selection of products and are reasonably priced, too. The only splurges I made are the Master Bath Shower which will include two Water Tile® body sprays, and I chose a beautiful, multi colored glass vessel sink for the powder room. The next step is to get the list to Sean for pricing and evaluation – then to Corie Baker and Courtney Mangum who need the sizes to add to their drawings.

Kevin Songer and Steve began the massive task of removing nails from the wood that will be chipped up and put back into the landscaping. An entire day on site and the pile is diminishing, but there’s still so much timber! The lumber that we’ll reuse in the home is being stacked neatly according to size and the piles just keep moving from one location to another. Steve and Kevin both had a blast today. Steve said they talked and laughed the entire time and really got to know each other on a brotherly basis. Kevin’s passion for Villa Paraiso is so deep, and I know he’s ecstatic to be on the Team. He has great and creative design ideas, and I’m really looking forward to going shopping for yard plants as well as all the potted plants we plan to have on the decks.

We recruited 4 additional, strong men to assist with the massive task on site. Today, Kevin is feeding the chipper with the broken wood and it is spewing wood chips into a pile that’s far taller than me! The dumpster that was overflowing with drywall is now going into a grinder that has covered our friend Tony in white dust! He looks a bit like Casper the friendly ghost! The weather this weekend is beautiful… it’s sunny, 77 degrees and a light breeze off the river.

Cathartic experience

February 24, 2009
I knocked down the wall today at the news conference. It was the most cathartic experience! I absolutely loved it – it was exciting and very symbolic. The final brick wall crashed down and it was official – our house, as we knew it was gone! It’s finally over – and our new home is becoming reality! After I drove the Bobcat into the wall, I hugged and kissed Steve. We both felt the absolute transition. Our Dream Team (“The Players”) was there along with City Councilor - Bill Bishop; Derek Igou – Deputy Director, Environmental and Compliance Department; Susan Cleveland, President of the local USGBC Chapter; and Donna Summerfield – LEED Rater.

We got news coverage on WJXT Channel 4 and www.News4Jax.com

Later - Steve told me, “Honey, you didn’t break a single brick when you knocked down the wall!” Excellent – more to salvage!

And I was off to Orlando February 24-27th – to do my REAL job.

Steve called me in Orlando and read me the letter we received from Mayor John Peyton. On the Home Page I was thrilled!! It’s wonderful how many people appreciate the magnitude of this project. We really appreciate the support and genuine kindness and empathy of so many people!

Design meeting…..

I got back to Jacksonville this afternoon just in time to meet Kevin Songer at a "Tree Sale" and we picked out 3 Cedar and one Holly Tree. Ten dollars each!!! What a deal! The cedar trees will be planted on the west side of the property to provide shade and modeled light into the windows for 3 seasons, and in the winter they will be barren which will allow much more light and heat into the home. Kevin has taken the trees to his greenhouse, until we can plant them.
Until next time....
